Quartzsite, AZ - 11/17/14

Monday – November 17, 2014
Dome Rock BLM
Quartzsite, Arizona

A cold front arrived on Sunday at the Lake Mead National Recreation Area in Boulder City, Nevada. The temperature during the day was in the high fifties and plummeted to 39 overnight. The weather forecast for this week in the Las Vegas, Nevada area is for daytime temperatures in the low sixties and nighttime temperatures in the middle forties.

Our scheduled departure from the Las Vegas area today was perfect. We will head to southern Arizona for warmer weather. We departed the Boulder Beach Campground at the Lake Mead National Recreation Area at 9:40 a.m. On our way to Arizona we passed through Laughin, Nevada. It was interesting to see the stark contrast between these two gambling meccas. Las Vegas is a mass of people and traffic, with numerous casinos lining the four-mile long strip, showcasing their spectacular lighting and water displays. Laughlin appears to be more sedate; about eight or nine casinos within about a half-mile long strip, with considerably less traffic and fewer people strolling about.

Within a few miles south of Laughlin, a dramatic change in road conditions takes place on U.S. highway 95 upon entering California. On the Nevada side, it is a four-lane, very well maintained highway. Upon crossing the state line into California, the highway is a two-lane, very rough, paved road. We were so happy to finally connect with I-40 and run that east over to Arizona highway 95.

We arrived in Quartzsite, Arizona at the Dome Rock BLM dispersed camping area at 2:45 p.m. The temperature is in the high sixties, a few degrees warmer than Las Vegas. We will spend one night here.
