Foothills Loop Trail
Kartchner Caverns State Park
Benson, Arizona
It was a bit cool last night, here at the Kartchner Caverns State Park, with the temperature dipping down into the low 30’s. This cooler weather is to be expected now that we are at an altitude of 4,750 feet. The weather forecast is for a sunny day with the daytime temperature to be in the high 60s. Perfect weather for a hike!
We set out to hike the Foothills Loop Trail. This is listed as a 2.5-mile trail, rated moderate to difficult. The trail climbs a limestone hill north of the cave and descends into the wash that follows the fault between the Whetstone Block and the San Pedro Block.
The trail starts out as a nicely graded sandy trail and then evolves into more challenging terrain to traverse. Dispersed throughout the length of the trail are magnificent views of the surrounding mountains.
We completed our hike, logging 4.2 miles on Sharon’s FitBit. We celebrated our hiking adventure, back at our campsite, with a Hill Bros. Cappuccino English Toffee (shameful product plug... but oh it is so good!). Life is good!
Tomorrow another adventure begins.
