PIMA Air & Space Museum - 04/01/15 - Tucson, AZ

Wednesday – April 1, 2015
PIMA Air & Space Museum
Tucson, Arizona

We visited the Pima Air & Space Museum today. It opened to the public on May 8, 1976. Since that time the museum has evolved from 35 aircraft in a bare desert setting to four football fields of indoor hangar space containing numerous aircraft and exhibits, plus over 150 aircraft on display outdoors.

Video I found on YouTube of the outdoor guided tour.

The list of aircraft on display is quite extensive; defined by the following types:

  • Attack Aircraft (6)
  • Bombers (10)
  • Cargo (14)
  • Commercial Aircraft (10)
  • Drones (2)
  • Fighter Aircraft (34)
  • Fire Fighting Aircraft (6)
  • General Aviation (12)
  • Helicopters (16)
  • MiGs (5)
  • NASA Aircraft (4)
  • Recon/Patrol Aircraft (17)
  • Refueling Aircraft (4)
  • Seaplanes (2)
  • Trainers (22)
  • VIP Aircraft (6)

Inside one of the hangars is the "Darth Vader" spy plane of the Air Force - the SR-71A Blackbird.

Plan to spend the entire day here, there is lots to see. There are five hangars plus the outside area to explore. On our self-guided tour we logged 5.1 miles.

Tomorrow another adventure begins.
