PIMA Air & Space Museum
Tucson, Arizona
We visited the Pima Air & Space Museum today. It opened to the public on May 8, 1976. Since that time the museum has evolved from 35 aircraft in a bare desert setting to four football fields of indoor hangar space containing numerous aircraft and exhibits, plus over 150 aircraft on display outdoors.
Video I found on YouTube of the outdoor guided tour.
The list of aircraft on display is quite extensive; defined by the following types:
- Attack Aircraft (6)
- Bombers (10)
- Cargo (14)
- Commercial Aircraft (10)
- Drones (2)
- Fighter Aircraft (34)
- Fire Fighting Aircraft (6)
- General Aviation (12)
- Helicopters (16)
- MiGs (5)
- NASA Aircraft (4)
- Recon/Patrol Aircraft (17)
- Refueling Aircraft (4)
- Seaplanes (2)
- Trainers (22)
- VIP Aircraft (6)
Inside one of the hangars is the "Darth Vader" spy plane of the Air Force - the SR-71A Blackbird.
Plan to spend the entire day here, there is lots to see. There are five hangars plus the outside area to explore. On our self-guided tour we logged 5.1 miles.
Tomorrow another adventure begins.
